U3A Croydon – About Us
|
Located in the leafy suburbs of Melbourne’s outer east, U3A Croydon opened its doors in 1992. Since then we have grown and evolved to meet the needs of the expanding local seniors population. Anyone who is retired or no longer working full time can become a member.
At U3A Croydon our mission is to provide people in their third age of life with opportunities to stay physically, mentally and socially active. We are run by volunteers who support our members to learn, teach, share, have fun and stay fit in a relaxed, friendly and stimulating environment.
We have:
- 1000 members
- 100 courses and
- 80 tutors
Our volunteers share their knowledge, skills and experience in a range of different roles. In doing so they express the original sense of the word ‘university’ – a community of people who gather together to learn from each other. But we’re not just about learning; our courses include games, physical activities and spirituality classes such as meditation.
Our members enjoy the intellectual engagement, the physical stimulation and the relaxing social environment our courses and activities offer. But for many members, what they value most are the friendships that develop along the way.
How does the U3A operate ?
The U3A Croydon is composed of and run by retired or semi-retired people aged 50 years and over. A general committee is elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting in December.Tutors and other leaders are volunteers who are generally drawn from the membership. Members are encouraged to become active participants in the classes. All administration is undertaken by volunteer members. The Maroondah City Council generously provides us with an office. U3A Croydon does not own any premises.
What is the relationship between each U3A?
Each U3A is autonomous. However, some have formed regional “alliances” to discuss matters of mutual interest.
Am I covered by insurance when attending U3A classes?
No.
What if I am a disabled person?
Most of U3A Croydon locations are suitable for disabled people. Dependent on disability U3A reserves the right to refuse enrolment in some courses due to risk of injury.
